The international seminar “Protection of copyright, related rights and collective management” was held on March 30-31, 2011 in Astana (the capital of the Republic Kazakhstan).
It was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Committee for Intellectual Property Rights, Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organization (IFRRO), Kazakh Society for Performers’ rights management (KOUPI) and other organizations.
Experts from Russia, Belgium and France, scientists, businessmen and representatives of national collecting societies – Russian Authors’ Society (RAO), Russian Organization for Intellectual Property (VOIS), Russian Union of Right-holders (RUR) and others took part in the event.
The seminar was devoted to Kazakhstan entry in the World Trade Organization and to the Common Free Market Zone due to which protection of intellectual property becomes more and more important.
Deputy Director of VOIS Mr. Erik Valdes-Martinez made a report “Copyright and collective management in Russia: experience and practice”. He told about VOIS activities, the advantages and opportunities that state accreditation of collective management societies gives to music users and right-owners.
“Such events give us an opportunity to discuss and optimize principles of our work with our foreign partners and to exchange the experience with them”, – he said.
