Intellectual Property Judges Forum held in Geneva

On November 13 – 15, 2019, the Second Intellectual Property (IP) Judges Forum was held at the Headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva.

The event aims to promote inter-ethnic dialogue among judicial bodies, provide judges from all over the world a platform to exchange experience on current issues in intellectual property arising in the background of rapid innovation and increased cross-border use of IP.

In most countries the judicial system is one of the first encounters with the innovations in the field of IP. Due to the rapid development of high technologies, new ways to use the results of intellectual activity appear, an entire creative environment is being formed, legislative regulation of which is often not yet determined. During the forum, experts discussed how to resolve disputes and issues for which there is no clear legislative framework.

128 judges from 74 countries attended the discussion. 29 experts from the UK, Italy, Germany, Australia, China, Uruguay, India, Singapore, Brazil, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and other countries spoke at the meeting.

Russian expertise was presented by Ramzia Khatypova, a Judge of the Chamber for Commercial Disputes of the Supreme Court of Russian Federation. Giving a case example considered by the Supreme Court of Russia, she spoke about the protection of the rights of foreign performers and producers of phonograms in Russia, and approaches to the application of the relevant international treaties elaborated in judicial practice.
